Seaweed is a superfood for human health.
Seaweed has been consumed since ancient times in Eastern cultures; its consumption is associated with longevity and a better quality of life.
At Algas Peruanas, we want to work not only with the European-Asian market, where seaweed is highly valued, but also in the West, where people are discovering all of its nutritional, functional, and culinary benefits.
From a nutritional standpoint, seaweed is low in calories and high in protein, dietary fiber, minerals, and vitamins.
At Seaweed, we specialize in seaweed for human consumption, sourced from the Peruvian coast, where the Humboldt Current provides it with nutrients, making it a highly valuable product.
Our Peruvian seaweed
We are leaders in the processing of seaweed, which we harvest in the regions between Hilo and La Talara. We work in south-central Peru with various communities that practice sustainable pasture management. Seaweed has a wide range of nutritional properties, including the following:
It helps protect your body.
During this pandemic, it is essential to strengthen our immune system. Seaweed boosts our defenses against viruses, bacteria, yeast, fungi, and cancer cells. Its high β-glucan content (even higher than that of other seaweeds) makes it truly special. β-glucans are a type of soluble fiber whose effects on blood sugar, insulin levels, cholesterol, and immunity have been observed. β-glucans work by stimulating macrophages, which constitute our first line of defense. Clinical trials have recently been conducted with products containing 70% β-glucans, showing a significant reduction in episodes of allergies and respiratory tract infections.

They lower cholesterol and are effective in reducing fatty liver.
Soluble fiber forms a gel-like substance when it absorbs water. In the digestive tract, this gel binds with the bile acids necessary for the absorption of cholesterol and other lipid compounds (lipoproteins), causing them to be excreted in the stool and thereby reducing their absorption.
Seaweed is high in fiber (53%), surpassing other types of seaweed with a high proportion of soluble fiber (34%), at nearly 19 grams per 100 grams on a dry weight basis.
It helps control your weight and prevent constipation
In addition to being low in calories—like all seaweeds—the high content of insoluble fiber helps regulate the intestinal tract, while soluble fiber affects fat absorption, which may aid in weight management.
Lowers blood glucose
In addition to fiber and β-glucans, seaweed contains high levels of polyphenolic compounds, which are antioxidants. Not all seaweeds have the same level of polyphenols, nor the same types. In studies conducted by USACH and PUC, cochayuyo showed the best results in reducing blood glucose levels.
These compounds help regulate blood sugar levels by inhibiting two key enzymes in the food digestion process: alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase. The more these digestive enzymes are inhibited, the less food is digested, which results in a more moderate release of glucose into the bloodstream, thereby controlling blood glucose levels—making it beneficial for patients with diabetes.

Ideal for vegans
Although its protein content is moderate at 12%, it has a very complete amino acid profile with high bioavailability. It contains vitamin B12 and vitamin E (a powerful antioxidant).
Detoxifies
This is due to the presence of alginic acid, which helps eliminate heavy metals, and its high content of cysteine, an amino acid that protects the liver and helps it function properly.
High in vitamins and minerals
Dried Peruvian seaweed has 10 times more calcium than a glass of milk. It contains 6 times more iron than lentils or spinach. It also provides a significant amount of copper, magnesium, manganese, and iodine, among other minerals. As for sodium, although the dry, unwashed product has a high sodium content—3,400 mg per 100 grams—this drops to 280 mg per 100 grams once the product is rehydrated and cooked.
high protein content
It contains more than 23% protein (making it an excellent meat substitute or dietary supplement), with an excellent amino acid profile.
It is also rich in calcium, magnesium, iron, and vitamins A and E.
High fiber content
Of the Chilean seaweeds we have analyzed, this one has the highest soluble and insoluble fiber content (over 59% in total), making it ideal for weight management and helping to prevent heart disease (in addition to the benefits mentioned above).
High antioxidant capacity
This seaweed has an excellent level of antioxidants—the highest among the seaweeds we sell. Dehydrated seaweed!
